New York City Crane Accidents
On March 16, 2008, a 22-story construction crane collapsed
at a construction site on Manhattan’s east side,
killing seven people and causing devastating damage.
Four construction workers were found dead shortly after
the collapse and two additional workers were discovered the
following morning. A young tourist was also killed by
the collapse. The crane was being used to construct a
high-rise building at 303 E. 51st Street between First
and Second Avenues. According to reports, a massive piece
of steel used to secure the towering crane to the new
building became loose and pancaked on top of a second
support structure nine stories below, causing the tower
to shear free and topple across several buildings.
The top portion of the crane, including the cab, broke
off and tumbled through the air, demolishing a four story
home and causing substantial damage to other buildings
a block away. According to preliminary reports by investigators,
a photograph of the collapsed collar showed one of the
nylon straps still attached with what appeared to be
a frayed and broken end. The New York City Department
of Buildings, which is responsible for issuing and reviewing
permits related to the installation and use of construction cranes,
and the Department of Emergency Management are conducting
an investigation into what exactly caused the accident
and there are no conclusive findings at this time.
